A municipality was recently planning the development of its land along a watercourse. In other words, it is the space needed for the river to evolve naturally, allowing it to manage floods, transport sediment, and support biodiversity without endangering human infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concept is based on the idea of <strong>freedom space<\/strong>. It combines two dimensions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the mobility space<\/strong>, meaning the zone where the watercourse can shift laterally through erosion and sedimentation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the flood-prone space<\/strong>, meaning the zone likely to be submerged during floods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these two dimensions help us better understand the natural dynamics of rivers. They also reveal the traces rivers leave in the landscape over time. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avizo.ca\/en\/services\/natural-environments-and-watercourses\/\">hydrogeomorphology and natural environments<\/a> teams combine this expertise with that of our biologists and geomatics specialists. Together, they build a complete picture of the watercourse under study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why delineate the functional space? A dual objective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mapping out the freedom space primarily addresses a dual challenge: preserving natural environments on one hand, and reducing risks to populations and infrastructure on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, better identification of this space helps anticipate flood-related hazards. It also helps anticipate the natural movements of the watercourse. The result: more sustainable land management. Furthermore, this delineation fits within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/agriculture-environnement-et-ressources-naturelles\/eau\/zones-inondables-mobilite-rives-littoral\/cadre-reglementaire\">modernized regulatory framework for managing flood zones and watercourse mobility zones<\/a>, which came into force in Quebec on March 1, 2026.
