H₂S measurement and monitoring in sewer systems

The measurement and monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in sewer systems is a specialized service designed to quantify concentrations of this corrosive and toxic gas in sewer pipes, pumping stations, and valve chambers. Avizo deploys continuous monitoring instruments at strategic points throughout the network to obtain an accurate picture of concentrations over extended periods. The collected data make it possible to identify critical areas where H₂S compromises the integrity of concrete infrastructure through biogenic corrosion, and where it poses a health risk to municipal workers in accordance with the requirements of the Act respecting occupational health and safety (AOHS).

When measurements reveal concerning concentrations, Avizo can combine the monitoring with an in-depth wastewater characterization over several days in order to trace back through the network and identify the source of the problem, which is often linked to industrial discharges rich in sulfates and organic matter. The results are compiled into a final report that presents the measured concentrations, locates at-risk areas and, where applicable, identifies the sources of contamination. This report provides municipalities with the evidence needed to plan safe interventions, prioritize rehabilitation work, require corrective action from the responsible industries, and protect the long-term integrity of their sewer infrastructure.
